The Seder Plate

On the first night of Passover, Jews recount the story of the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt.

The meal which takes place during the course of the evening – is known as the Seder. With the centrepiece of the Seder a special plate, known as the Seder plate.  This plate contains six symbolic foods relating to the exodus.

Karpas- a leafy green vegetable, usually a piece of lettuce, symbolizing hope and redemption.

Charoset – sweet paste made of fruit and nuts, symbolizing the mortar the slaves used to build the Egyptian pyramids.

Maror and Chazeret – bitter herbs, a reminder of the bitterness of slavery.

Zeroah – shank bone, representing the Passover sacrifice.

Egg – a hard-boiled egg, symbolizing the festival sacrifice that was offered in the Temple in Jerusalem
